Media Advisory: Regional Meeting on the Planning and Implementation of Prevalence Surveys on Violence against Women in the Arab States

What: UN Women, WHO, and UN ESCWA are organizing a meeting to bring together relevant partners in the Arab States region to discuss a way forward in advancing methods and strategies to measure violence against women (VAW) in line with globally agreed methodological and ethical standards. The meeting also aims to discuss the potential of developing a strategy and way forward to strengthen regional and national capacity on measuring violence against women and obtaining high-quality and reliable data on violence against women. The meeting will consist of interactive sessions to exchange and share good practices and lessons learned on VAW surveys. Furthermore, the meeting is expected to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of National Statistical Offices, National Women’s Machineries, government representative and other relevant stakeholders in the Arab States region on VAW measurement.

In 2018, UN Women and WHO commenced the implementation of the 5-year global joint programme “Strengthening Methodologies and Measurement and Building National Capacities for Violence against Women Data”, whose goal is to ensure that quality, comparable data on different forms of VAW is available and collected over time to address national data gaps and meet policy and reporting commitments under the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

This initiative is generously supported by the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom (DFID).
