Gender equality experts from across the Arab States met at the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Beirut in September to review a regional report on the progress made by Arab countries in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

Organized by UN Women in partnership with ESCWA, the League of Arab States (LAS), and the Arab Women Organization (AWO), the meeting presented and discussed the regional summary report based on the 20 national reports submitted earlier this year by Arab member States to contribute towards the global review for Beijing+25.

The meeting brought together representatives of national women’s machineries in the Arab States region, as well as national gender and human rights institutions, and relevant international and regional organizations and gender experts.

The report included general recommendations to advance gender equality and promote women’s empowerment in the region including localization of international frameworks in domestic policies, ensuring the comprehensiveness of national efforts in implementing social protection for women and girls, protecting women and girls from all forms of violence, improving governance of gender equality mechanisms and promoting data and statistics on gender equality.

Participants provided technical inputs and recommendations on the draft regional report that will be presented for validation during the High-Level meeting on Beijing+25 to be held on 28 November 2019 at ESCWA.

Members of the UN Women-supported Youth Agora Network also had a chance to attend the meeting to participate in the discussion and provide their recommendations to the regional report.

The final global report will be presented during the sixty-fourth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW64) that will take place in New York in March 2020.
