The League of Arab States (LAS), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Women Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) will host a regional online event titled “Working Together to End Violence Against Women in the Arab States Region” on March 25, 2021.

Organized in the sidelines of the sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW65), to be held from 15 to 26 March 2021, the event aims to reinforce the commitment by the LAS member states to eliminate gender-based violence in the Arab States region and take stock of the efforts being made towards achieving this especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has further exposed violence against women as a regional emergency requiring urgent action and it has laid bare not only the failure of previous efforts to effectively prevent and respond to violence in the region, but also the deeply entrenched and systemic nature of violence perpetrated by men against women and girls.

The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss challenges posed by the pandemic, and the potential and opportunities opening up in the Arab States region in light of a newly endorsed UN General Assembly resolution on “Strengthening national and international rapid response to the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on women and girls.”

The meeting will be attended by representatives from the governments and the UN, as well as regional thematic experts and civil society organizations.
