Online briefing: The Unheard Voices of the Lockdown
Impacts of COVID-19 on Gender Equality and Violence Against Women in the Arab States RegionDate:
UN Women Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) is hosting an online briefing to present the preliminary results of two rapid assessments conducted to document the impacts of COVID-19 on gender equality and violence against women in the Arab States region.
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, women around the world, including in the Arab States, have been playing a disproportionate role in responding to the disease, including as frontline healthcare workers, carers at home, and as community leaders and mobilisers. They have also been disproportionately affected by measures to contain the virus, and domestic violence has emerged as an impact of the pandemic in the Arab region.
In this context, UN Women ROAS conducted a web-survey in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Yemen focused on gender roles, attitudes and practices related to gender equality and violence against women. A total of 16,462 respondents took part in the survey.
A second study was conducted among civil society organizations (CSOs) to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on their work, including the continuation of their services and the implications for violence against women in the region. Over 210 organizations from 14 countries in the region took part in the survey.
The online briefing will introduce the preliminary findings of both studies and will provide recommendations to address violence against women in COVID-19 response and recovery plans across the region.
Registration is mandatory to access the online briefing. Please register here.
