Organization of Islamic Cooperation launches Women Development Organization at 8th Ministerial Conference on Women

On 8 July 2021, the 8th Ministerial Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Women met in Egypt for a high-level exchange under the theme of ‘Preserving the Achievements of Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women in Light of the Covid-19 Pandemic and Beyond’.

Under the auspices of H.E. Abdelfattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the meeting discussed important issues such as the progress the OIC has made in implementing its ‘Plan of Action for the Advancement of Women’, including particularly the initial work of the newly established Women Development Organization of the OIC. UN Women is proud to be a partner to this important new organization.

At the event, Anita Bhatia, UN Women’s Deputy Executive Director for UN Coordination, Partnerships, Resources and Sustainability, delivered remarks highlighting that gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are key priorities of the Member States of the OIC countries.
