UN Women Global Convening Women Leadership for Sustainable Peace - MENA and Afghanistan

Twenty-two years after the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace, and security (WPS), the evidence is clearer than ever of the importance of, and need for, this agenda.

In Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen, women human rights defenders, leaders, and peace-builders continue to push for peace and are the driving force behind gender equality gains, but their efforts often go unrecognized.

To address this, UN Women organized the Global Convening on Women’s Leadership for Sustainable Peace, bringing together women leaders to exchange experiences for peaceful communities. The global conference, taking place in Geneva (Switzerland) in November 2022, was the fifth organized under the Regional Programme “Enhancing Women’s Leadership for Sustainable Peace in Fragile Contexts in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA)” – a programme funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
