UN Women Message Commemorating the First Meeting of the Emergency Committee

Armed conflicts in the Arab region have proliferated and have generated a devasting impact on societies, including vulnerable groups of women and girls - particularly among the refugees and displaced, bringing about a number of social, economic and security challenges that have overshadowed women and girls’ security and safety in armed conflicts.

The United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 adopted in 2000 on Women, Peace and Security stressed the importance of equal participation and the full involvement of women in all efforts for maintaining and promoting peace and security, recognizing that peace is closely linked to gender equality and the empowerment of women as a fundamental step towards lasting peace and security. The partnership between UN Women and the League of Arab States has yielded a range of important and fruitful initiatives that advances the implementation of WPS commitments in the Arab States region.

This meeting is a testament to the ongoing collaboration between LAS and UN Women, united by a shared vision to implement the WPS agenda and achieve progress across its four pillars: participation and representation, prevention, protection, and relief and recovery.
