UN Women Leads Multi-Partner Effort to Empower Libyan Women’s Political Roadmap
Date:
Tripoli, Libya — Marking National Libyan Women’s Day on 25 April 2026, UN Women, in strategic partnership with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), convened a high-level roundtable titled “Amplifying Women’s Priorities within the Structured Dialogue.” This forum served as a critical platform for the Libyan Women Caucus (LWC), women municipal leaders, and women representatives from civil society advocates to transition from high-level policy advocacy toward the rigorous political implementation of women-led agendas across the nation.
As the leading UN entity dedicated to the empowerment of women, UN Women underscored that while women’s participation in the Structured Dialogue has reached a significant 35%, the objective must now shift from numerical presence to substantive influence. Through the tireless work of the LWC, participants have articulated a roadmap that seeks to embed inclusive strategies into the very fabric of Libyan governance. This involves moving beyond tokenism to ensure women hold decisive roles in executive and legislative bodies, removing the structural barriers that hinder economic independence, and ensuring that the perspectives of women serve as the cornerstone of national security protocols and human rights protections.
The discussions were candid regarding the multifaceted obstacles that continue to impede the progress of Libyan women leaders, specifically the persistence of restrictive social norms, deep-seated structural inequalities within legal frameworks, and the alarming rise of violence against women in public and political life. UN Women emphasized that addressing these barriers is not merely a social obligation but a political necessity for a stable Libya. By bridging the gap between national institutional actors and grassroots activists, the LWC aims to create a unified front that ensures the political roadmap remains both inclusive and sustainable for future generations.
In a collective show of support, UN Women, alongside UNSMIL and UNDP, reaffirmed their commitment to championing Libyan women as the primary architects of the country’s democratic future. The partners pledged to provide the technical and political scaffolding necessary to ensure that the priorities identified during this dialogue are not just heard, but are meaningfully reflected in the final political outcomes of the transition. This collaboration highlights a shared vision where the full, equal, and meaningful participation of women is recognized as the essential catalyst for lasting peace and national reconciliation.
