In the presence of several members of the local executive offices, the Governorate of Taiz witnessed the inauguration of two women’s protection centers, newly rehabilitated to provide protection and psychosocial support services to women. These centers are part of the project titled "Protecting Women Leads to Societal Development", implemented by UN Women Yemen with the support of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), and in partnership with the For All Foundation for Development.

The services are provided to women in Taiz through the Women’s Empowerment Center in Al-Qahira District, Taiz City, and the Al-Khair Development Foundation Center in the coastal district of Al-Mokha.

This initiative comes in response to the growing need for protection and psychosocial support services for women in Yemen. The project aims to reach 18,000 displaced women and girls and survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) in the governorates of Aden and Taiz, providing specialized services including psychosocial support, legal counseling, and safety and protection services. It also seeks to build the capacity of 325 frontline workers in safe spaces and protection centers.

Over the course of 12 months, the project will also aim to reach approximately 126,000 indirect beneficiaries from local communities through awareness campaigns and empowerment activities.

In his remarks, Mr. Abdo Ali Mohammed, Director General of the Social Affairs and Labor Office in Taiz, noted that such initiatives contribute to the development and empowerment of women and encouraged the establishment of more projects that benefit society at large, particularly women. He thanked the supporting entities for their commitment to this type of impactful work.

Mr. Abdullah Al-Hubaishi, Head of the Humanitarian Cell in Al-Mokha District, emphasized the urgent need for such services in the western coastal areas, particularly Al-Mokha, which significantly lack women-focused protection projects.

The two centers represent a qualitative addition to the existing protection mechanisms in Taiz and provide safe spaces that uphold the dignity of women and girls amid ongoing challenges.
