The UN Women Regional Office for the Arab States invites journalists and media representatives to cover the regional conference “From Pledge to Action to fulfill Beijing +30 Review Commitments in the Arab States: Sharing Knowledge on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls.”
Hosted in Amman from 8–9 December 2025, the conference will bring together senior government officials, legal and policy experts, service providers, regional organizations, UN agencies, and development partners. This important regional forum will facilitate learnings and knowledge exchange from governmental and institutional actors to progress toward eliminating violence against women and girls in the private, public and digital spheres. Participants will examine emerging challenges, including technology-facilitated abuse, and highlight promising legal reforms and service delivery models across the Arab States.
WHY IT MATTERS
Violence against women and girls remains one of the region’s most urgent human rights challenges:
- 31% of ever- engaged and married women in the Arab States report physical or sexual violence, above the global average.
- Conflicts, displacement, and economic pressures continue to heighten risks.
- Technology-facilitated violence, including online harassment, deepfakes, and attacks on women public figures, is rapidly expanding, with 49 % of women internet users in the Arab States stating they don’t feel safe from sexual harassment online.
Despite major efforts, such as the Arab Declaration on Combating All Forms of VAWG (2022), the Muskat Declaration (2024) and significant national legal reforms, Beijing+30 review findings highlight ongoing gaps in legislation, essential services, protection systems, and financing.
Participants
The conference will bring together technical-level representatives from government institutions across the Arab States, alongside regional bodies such as the League of Arab States, the African Union, and the Follow up Mechanism to the Belem do Para Convention. It will also convene UN entities, including UN Women, UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO, UNDP, as well as experts in legal reform, essential services, digital violence, social norms, data systems, and humanitarian settings.
- Participating agencies and entities are under confirmation.
Expected Outcome
Participants will learn from peer good practices and advocate for their upscaling and adaptation to their own context to fulfil the Beijing +30 commitments to end violence against women and girls.
Media Opportunities
Journalists will be able to attend the opening session (From 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on 8 December), speak directly with regional experts and officials on legal reforms, digital violence, essential services, and crisis-related responses, and request interviews with key speakers.
