The UN Women Regional Office for the Arab States invites media representatives to cover the first-ever Regional Open Day on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) in the Arab States; an event marking the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. Hosted in Amman from 2–4 December 2025, the Open Day will bring together senior government officials, women peacebuilders, civil society leaders, regional organizations, UN agencies, and donors. This high-level regional forum will assess 25 years of progress, confront emerging challenges, and outline priorities for advancing the WPS agenda and the vital role women contribute to shaping peace, recovery, and stability across the region.

Why it matters

UN Security Council Resolution 1325, adopted in 2000, set a global promise: women must be at the center of conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and recovery. Twenty-five years on, that promise remains urgent in the Arab States, where protracted conflicts, political transitions, displacement, and recurring humanitarian crises, continue to hit women and girls the hardest. Today, an estimated 22.4 million women and girls across the region require humanitarian assistance.

The Arab region has made important progress, including the adoption of nine National Action Plans on WPS, but implementation is still constrained by structural inequalities, declining global funding, and shrinking civic space. As the world marks the 25th anniversary of UNSCR 1325, there is a critical need to re-energize commitments, elevate evidence, and ensure women’s perspectives shape regional and global peace and security processes.

The 2025 Regional Open Day provides a unique platform to do exactly that. Through high-level plenaries, expert panels, thematic working groups, and a dedicated civil society consultation, the event will generate forward-looking recommendations ahead of the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. A roadmap entailing key recommendations for the advancement and implementation of WPS Agenda in the Arab States, developed by civil society organizations across the region, will be presented on the final day to guide collective action for the next quarter century.

This event is organized with support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ) through GIZ, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, and the Government of Japan.
