At the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) Retreat held in June 2026, equality between women and men was positioned as a shared system-wide priority and a core element of strengthened UN coordination in Egypt. The discussion on the UN System-Wide Gender Equality Acceleration Plan (UNSW-GEAP) marked an important milestone for advancing collective leadership, accountability, and practical alignment across agencies.

During the retreat, Marwa Alameldeen, Officer in Charge at UN Women Egypt Country Office, framed Gender Equality Acceleration Plan as more than a global normative commitment:  it is a practical framework to help the UN system translate women’s rights into coordinated action at the country-level. By linking the UNSW-GEAP to ongoing planning and accountability processes, the discussion underlined the importance of moving from individual agency efforts toward a more coherent and mutually reinforcing approach. The discussion generated strong commitment and keen interest from heads of agencies to actively participate in the development of the UN Country Gender Equality Profile (UNCGEP). This engagement is significant because the UNCGEP will provide the evidence base to identify common priorities, strengthen gender analysis, and ensure that the next United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) cycle creates greater impact for women and girls in Egypt.

By placing the UNSW-GEAP at the center of the retreat conversation, UN Women highlighted the need for stronger coordination mechanisms that can support agencies to align their contributions, track progress, and strengthen accountability for advancing women’s rights. The retreat created an opportunity to reaffirm that equality between women and men is not a standalone thematic area, but a cross-cutting priority that shapes the quality, relevance, and impact of UN support to national development priorities. A key outcome of the discussion was the recognition of the Gender Theme Group (GTG) as an enabling coordination platform. The GTG is expected to support the development of the UNCGEP and contribute to shaping the roadmap for the next UNSDCF, particularly through focused efforts to strengthen the UNCT’s collective capacity to advance women’s rights across its joint programmes and activities. This role will be essential in ensuring that equality between men and women is reflected not only in analysis and planning, but also in implementation, monitoring, and learning across the UN system.

The retreat also provided an opportunity to identify and share good practices in advancing women’s rights across UN agencies. Tasking the GTG with collecting these examples can help build a stronger evidence base for what works, encourage peer learning, and showcase how different parts of the UN system are contributing to advancing women’s rights in complementary ways.

As the UN system in Egypt moves toward the next UNSDCF cycle, the momentum generated through the retreat offers a valuable foundation for more integrated and results-oriented effort to advance women’s rights. By connecting UNSW-GEAP, the UNCGEP, and the role of the GTG, the discussion helped define a pathway for stronger coordination, deeper accountability, and more effective integration of women’s rights priorities across UN agencies.

Ultimately, the story of the UNSW-GEAP at the UNCT Retreat is a story of collective acceleration. It shows how strategic leadership, shared ownership, and coordinated action can create a pathway to ensure that equality between women and men remains central to the UN’s work in Egypt and to the broader effort to deliver more inclusive and transformative development results.
