It’s 10 a.m. and after a two-hour drive, Rawan Majali arrives at her destination: the small, sandy UN Women Oasis Centre in Taibeh, perched atop the sprawling rural hills of the Karak district. Here, as the melodious sounds of music stream out from behind the spartan walls, Rawan jumps straight from the car to partake in traditional dancing alongside the 10 Syrian and Jordanian women already stomping their feet in tune.

Deep within the rural community of Karak lies the town of Taibeh, where 39-year-old Mona Ahmed Alqkla, found a safe place for her family seven years ago after fleeing the conflict in Dara'a, Syria. She had never had the opportunity to work, until now. She recently joined the incentive-based volunteer programme as a tailor in the Oasis Centre in Taibeh, which was launched by the Ministry of Social Development in partnership with UN Women in March 2019.

Mohamed Magdy is a volunteer in Imbaba, Giza with UN Women’s Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW) programme, working to raise awareness of gender equality and women’s empowerment. Before joining the programme, Mohamed did not have constructive thoughts and beliefs about gender equality and women’s empowerment, but now he is working to change his community to become safer for and more inclusive of women and girls.

The President of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly visited the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from 21-24 July. Commending Jordan’s efforts in response to the refugee crisis, she also noted the government's awareness and commitment to work towards attaining Goal 5 on gender equality and women’s empowerment. In partnership with the Greater Amman Municipality and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the Arabic HeforShe movement organized a closing ceremony to mark the conclusion of its second phase and to commemorate the milestone achievement of 20,000 commitments reached across the Kingdom in support of gender equality and women’s empowerment. Launched in 2015 in Jordan, Arabic HeforShe engaged more than 500 youth volunteers in Jordan’s universities and communities, 200 of whom were awarded during the closing ceremony.
