COVID-19 in the Middle East and North Africa: Impact on women's economic empowerment and policy responses

Date:

UN Women, UNDP and OECD will host a webinar on Wednesday 8 July to take a closer look at governments’ investments in gender equality and women’s economic empowerment in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The webinar will discuss the role of the private sector and civil society organizations (CSOs) as supporters of, and beneficiaries from, an economic recovery process that is gender-responsive. The event will be attended by policymakers, CSOs and private sector representatives to discuss and contribute ideas for future gender-responsive policy.

In considering the economic impact of the crisis on women in public and private sectors in the Arab States region, the webinar will review how different countries have mainstreamed gender equality and women’s economic empowerment in their post-COVID19 economic recovery plans, including in fiscal stimulus packages.

The webinar will also be an opportunity to analyze current trends on gender equality and women’s economic empowerment in the context of the COVID-19 crisis, while highlighting good practices from countries on engendering stimulus packages programmes and recovery plans. The event will compile a set of key policy recommendations for addressing the negative impact of the pandemic on women, from employment loss and income insecurity to the increase in unpaid care work.
