WHAT: In the lead up to the 25th anniversary commemoration of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 2020, the UN Women Regional Office for the Arab States will host a Youth and Inter-Generational Forum with youth leaders and gender experts to prepare a youth submission on the Beijing+25 regional review and global review process and an action plan for youth engagement. The discussions will contribute to the 64th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW64) which will focus on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly.
Young people in the Arab States region represent a major part of the society: about 30% of the population is under 15 years old, and more than 70 million people in the region are aged between 15 and 24 years of age. Across the region, young women continue to face gender-based discrimination and marginalization, including unequal access to education and opportunities for leadership and participation, as well as diverse forms of violence.
Bringing together young activists from the Arab States and Beijing platform experts from the region, the meeting will consist of interactive sessions to exchange knowledge and experiences and identify gaps, challenges and good practices for the promotion of gender equality. Furthermore, the meeting is expected to expand opportunities for youth participation and engagement in national, regional and global intergovernmental processes and policies regarding gender equality and women’s empowerment.
