The 2022 Women on Boards Observatory annual monitoring report analyzes data and track records for the representation of women on boards and senior leadership positions of the Egyptian Exchange (EGX) listed companies, the banking sector, the public enterprise sector, and the non-banking financial sector supervised and regulated by the Financial Regulatory Authority. The women on boards indicator have significantly improved from 16.7 percent in 2021 to 19.7 percent in 2022.

The UN Women Egypt Country Office’s Country Portfolio Brief gives a comprehensive overview on the main programmes implemented by UN Women during the period from 2023 to 2027 in support of the Arab Republic of Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women (NSEEW).

The study surveyed 2,400 Jordanian men and women aged 18-59, from 12 governorates across Jordan, as well as 512 Syrian men and women living in Amman, Zarqa, Irbid and Mafraq. The research also includes a qualitative component that involved 110 men and women who participated in 12 focus group discussions and 17 in-depth interviews.

UN Women, the IFC and the UN Global Compact have taken action to support companies and women in the Arab States during COVID-19, recognizing that eliminating barriers to women’s economic participation and empowerment drives the growth of businesses and economies and improves the lives of families and communities.

Women’s economic empowerment is critical for sustainable peace and development in Libya. This study focuses on women’s empowerment in the economic track of Libya’s peace process. It considers the benefits of gender-mainstreaming and the normative framework that supports gender equality, including UN Security Council resolutions in relation to Libya and the Women, Peace and Security agenda, the peacebuilding framework for Libya and international human rights law.

Morocco’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, through its Department of Financial Studies and Forecasting (DEPF) in partnership with UN Women Morocco and with the support of the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union (EU), has conducted a new study on "Gender Analysis of the Contribution of Labour Utilization to Improved Living Standards: A Retrospective and Prospective Analysis in Light of the Recommendations of the New Development Model”.

Few Syrian refugee and Lebanese women participate in the labour force in Lebanon, often due to critical gender barriers: housework and childcare obligations. This is particularly true for low-income women, who participate in economic activities at lower rates than men and are often unable to afford home help. Inadequate or absent childcare services contribute to women’s economic inactivity and serve as barriers that limit women’s mobility.

In 2019, regional UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations including UNICEF, UN Women, ESCWA, FAO, UNFPA, UNDP, UNESCO, WFP, WHO, Plan International and Terre des Hommes Foundation came together to work on the Regional Situational Analysis (SitAn) of Women and Girls in the MENA and Arab States Region.

This sector-specific gender analysis provides evidence on which the EU, EU Member States, and other stakeholders may base strategic priorities for action in support of gender equality over the next seven years in Lebanon, in line with the EU’s global Gender Action Plan III (GAP III) framework.

The objective of this regional assessment is to look at the implications of the macroeconomic response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Arab region. The regional mapping allows for identification of the dominant trends and policy priorities across different areas of interventions and looks at the potential implications of [largely] gender-blind macroeconomic responses and investments during the first six months of the pandemic.

The Guidance Note, produced through funding by the Government of Japan, includes practical tools and detailed recommendations to help stakeholders roll out high quality and gender-responsive CVA interventions.

The aim of this report is to present evidence on the impact of UN Women’s interventions and provide in-depth analysis around resilience and factors critical for strengthening resilience. This will allow UN Women to expand its evidence based on resilience and help better design programmes, ensuring that they are mainly based on needs and vulnerabilities of the population of concern.

With thanks to the Government of Japan, who generously funded the regional ‘Women's Leadership, Empowerment, Access, and Protection (LEAP) project as well as the resilience monitoring efforts in 2020 and 2020, UN Women in Yemen was able to roll-out the gender-sensitive resilience capacity index in Al Hodaidah, Aden and Hadramout through its implementing partners, the Yemeni Women Union (YWU), Women Charity Association for Combating Poverty (WACP) and Youth Leadership Development Institute (YLDF).

These policy papers are developed within the framework of the Beijing+25 Review and the Generation Equality Forum. Given the pluralistic nature of the Arab region, and in view of UN Women’s commitment to participation and inclusivity, a series of policy papers on four gender thematic areas were prepared by the Arab States CSOs and Feminists Network to amplify the voice of civil society and feminist organizations and push forward the gender equality agenda.
