Morocco’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, through its Department of Financial Studies and Forecasting (DEPF) in partnership with UN Women Morocco and with the support of the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union (EU), has conducted a new study on "Gender Analysis of the Contribution of Labour Utilization to Improved Living Standards: A Retrospective and Prospective Analysis in Light of the Recommendations of the New Development Model”.

The objective of this regional assessment is to look at the implications of the macroeconomic response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Arab region. The regional mapping allows for identification of the dominant trends and policy priorities across different areas of interventions and looks at the potential implications of [largely] gender-blind macroeconomic responses and investments during the first six months of the pandemic.

This desk review summarises global and regional trends and best practices and techniques for reaching out remotely to women and girls who experience violence, including during lockdowns and to survivors of online violence.

This study and brief aim at providing insights on how gender and other intersecting inequalities impact the risk and vulnerability to HIV for women and girls in Africa.

This assessment developed by UNW, UNHCR, WFP and UNICEF demonstrate gender inequalities across the Syrian refugee population, limiting access, rights and opportunities for women and girls, particularly as related to economic participation, education, food insecurity, humanitarian assistance, legal issues, and wider protections, including sexual and gender-based violence.

The brief highlights the significant role women play in the response to combating the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly as health care professionals, home-based caregivers, and through their role as social facilitators and coordinators within communities. In Morocco, women account for 57% of medical staff, 66% of paramedical staff and 64% of social sector civil servants.

The regional programme Men and Women for Gender Equality produced a brief that includes 10 strategies to engage men and boys in partnership with women and girls to achieve gender equality. These strategies were developed and field-tested during the three years of implementation (2015-2018) of the programme in Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco and Palestine.

Displacement and shifting gender roles have aggravated the situation of Syrian female refugees in the region, putting them at critical risk of violence and exploitation.

Like their male counterparts, female refugees in Lebanon are struggling to meet even their most basic needs. But their challenges are aggravated by entrenched gender inequalities and norms.

This report aims to amplify the voices and experiences of Syrian, Yemeni and Iraqi women who make significant contributions to the stability and security of their communities through resolving and managing local conflict, yet whose efforts are often marginalized, dismissed and misrepresented as insignificant. Presented as a series of case studies, the report examines how women in the region engage, influence and shape local processes for conflict and dispute resolution.

UN Women, with financial support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and in partnership with the Inclusive Peace and Transition Initiative (IPTI) at the Graduate School Geneva, organized a three-day meeting entitled Mobilizing women in the MENA region: Roadmaps for peace in Iraq, Syria and Yemen. The meeting was held in Beirut, Lebanon from 19 – 21 June 2018 and aimed to provide a space for women’s rights actors from conflict affected countries to engage in closed-door strategic planning around building momentum for inclusive peace.

The International Men and Gender Equality Survey – Middle East and North Africa (IMAGES MENA) is the first study of its kind in the MENA region to take a wide-angle, comparative lens to the lives of men – as sons and husbands and fathers, at home and at work, in public and private life – to better understand how they see their positions as men, and their attitudes and actions toward gender equality.

The report also describes how the determinants of low female labour force participation in the region have been discussed in scholarly literature, prepares economic and gender profiles of 17 Arab countries and puts forward a synthesis of policy recommendations for female-inclusive growth in the future.

This study seeks to generate a sound understanding of women’s financial inclusion, and more specifically in conflict and post-conflict situations in selected Arab States; it assesses prospects for and challenges to the achievement of women’s financial inclusion and documents good practices and lessons learned to inform UN Women’s future interventions in this area.
