Costing the Economic Impact of Violence against Women in the Arab Region to Be Released This Week

What: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA); the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women); the Swedish Institute in Alexandria; and the Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW) at the Lebanese American University (LAU) have joined hands to launch the outcome of the first phase of a riveting project on “Estimating the Cost of the Economic Impact of Violence against Women in the Arab Region”.

Why: Costing VAW should be a key priority for Arab States, based on the recognition that it is a critical human rights violation that has a negative multiplier effect on the rights of women, economic growth, public health and societal wellbeing. It requires political commitment and leadership to prevent it, mitigate its consequences and prosecute its perpetrators.

Who: The audience will listen to statements by United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary, Mohamed Ali Al-Hakim; Director of the Swedish Institute Alexandria, Peter Weiderud; UN Women Regional Director for Arab States, Mohammad Naciri; Professor of Economics and Assistant Provost for Special External Projects at LAU Wassim Shahin; and Director of the ESCWA Centre for Women, Mehrinaz Elawady. With a special appearance by Tunisian Actor Dhafer L'Abidine and Media Personality Ricardo Karam.

The event will be attended by concerned top officials in the Arab governments, namely ministers of women's affairs; heads of national institutions for the advancement of women, as well as representatives of the Arab and foreign diplomatic corps, the United Nations agencies and civil society organizations.
